Assistant Coach

Coach Stanton grew up in West St. Paul and later graduated from Sibley High School in Mendota Heights. While there he played both football and baseball.

Doug went on to attend college at St. Olaf where he worked on a double major, receiving his BA in English/Education. At St. Olaf, coach Stanton continued on in sports where he played both baseball and football. He later received his MA from St. Mary's University in Minneapolis.

Coach Stanton began his coaching career as an assistant for the West St. Paul Challenger Legion baseball team, a 1995 Legion state tournament participant. He later moved on to Owatonna where he coached freshman baseball and was the summer VFW coach from 1996 to 1999.

A move to Lakeville in 1999 found Doug coaching freshman baseball once again for the next five years. He was promoted to sophomore coach for Lakeville High School in 2005 and one year later was again promoted, this time as head coach for the junior varsity baseball team.

Coach Stanton also served as head coach for the Lakeville Mickey Mantle team from 2002 through 2006. During that time they were state champions in 2002, 2003 and 2005. His team was also a Babe Ruth World Series runner-up in 2002 and a World Series participant in 2003.

Coach Stanton also coached football for Owatonna from 1996 until 1999. He moved on to coach football for Lakeville High School from 2000 to 2004. In 2005 he came to South where he has served as an assistant football coach for the Cougars.

Doug taught 8th grade English at Owatonna Junior High from 1996 until 1999, when he accepted the same position for McGuire Middle School where he presently still teaches.

Coach Stanton's greatest coaching influence was St. Olaf head baseball coach, Jim Dimick, who taught him to respect the game through organization, preparation, and focusing on the fundamentals. From coach Dimick he was taught to play hard, play disciplined, and play with enthusiasm. He learned the value of teamwork and building character through the game of baseball.

Doug's favorite quote is from his former St. Olaf coach, who would often say; “Ask yourself, is the world a better place because you’re in it, and is our team a better team because you’re on it.”

Coach Stanton is married to wife Maggie who is also a teacher in the Lakeville school system. They have two children, Kyle and Josh, but are expecting a new arrival sometime in May.
